On January 29, 2026, Cascades announced an agreement to sell its Richmond, British Columbia, corrugated packaging plant to Crown Paper Group. The useful detail was how each side described its operating network.
Cascades said the plant’s geography offered limited integration potential within its network. Crown already had a British Columbia presence and an integrated containerboard mill in Port Townsend, Washington. In the same announcement, Crown’s CEO linked Richmond to further integration of its mill and box operations. Those were the companies’ reasons for the deal, not demonstrated improvements.
What the later report records
Cascades’ 2025 annual report, which includes subsequent events in 2026, describes the plant as sold. It records C$65.5 million, net of adjustments agreed at signing, settled through C$60 million received on February 2, 2026 and the assumption of certain liabilities. The report retains a qualification for further closing adjustments. That note does not itemise the liabilities being assumed. The larger figure was not all cash; the receipt date is not separately identified as the closing date.
That settlement evidence does not establish whether the planned integration benefits materialised.
Connect the network to customer needs
Crown Packaging’s undated website, reviewed September 14, 2026, describes an integrated manufacturer and marketer of corrugated cartons and sheets. It says its packaging is tailored to customers’ marketing, operational and distribution needs. That is the company’s current description, not Richmond’s closing inventory or a measurement of the acquisition’s results.
For an owner, the question is concrete: which existing operating connection serves which customer requirement, and what evidence would demonstrate its proposed benefit?
