Good morning. Today: engineering skills change hands, and AI capital shows up at two different stages.
This selection covers disclosures after September 15 at 6:32 a.m. through September 16 at 7:13 a.m., Toronto time; times are rounded to the nearest minute.
Englobe adds skills and reach
Laval-based Englobe announced its acquisition of Calgary’s Reinbold Engineering Group, a mechanical engineering firm with expertise in energy modelling, commissioning and sustainable design.
Englobe says the addition brings more than 90 team members across Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Vancouver and Toronto. The buyer, a Colliers company, is adding both specialised building-performance capabilities and a regional team network.
That gives this acquisition a concrete shape: technical skills plus people in five Canadian cities. The transaction terms weren’t disclosed, and the announcement doesn’t establish a separate closing day.
A seed round for practical AI
Expertise AI announced CA$3.2 million in seed funding from Toronto, led by UpHonest Capital, with AMINO Capital, Welight Capital, UpScaleX and AltaIR Capital participating.
The stated aim is to help traditional-industry businesses deploy AI agents in sales and customer support. The company describes engineers working alongside customer teams to choose an initial workflow, connect knowledge and systems, and establish what an agent can do and when a person should intervene.
It’s a specific operating pitch: start with a workflow and define the handoff to a human. The funding announcement doesn’t establish an exact closing day.
Radical reaches a first close
Radical Ventures announced the first close of its Radical Breakouts Fund, with over US$1 billion in commitments to the late-stage strategy.
The Toronto-connected manager intends to back AI companies globally, including in Canada. Named investors include PSP Investments, CPP Investments, HOOPP, TD, BMO, CI Global Asset Management and OPTrust.
The useful distinction is where that capital sits: these are fund commitments at a first close. They aren’t an announcement that the money has already been deployed into Canadian companies, and this isn’t a final-close notice. The global mandate also matters when reading the Canadian headline.
